#11 Marketing Ideas to help sales in the new year

By Margaret Furnace

The Christmas and New Year are over, now is the time to promote your business so that you can have a successful year in 2005. Below are some ideas on marketing in the New Year.

Launch a Competition
With the start of the New Year and sales being down after the Festive Season launch into 2005 in the aim of reaching record sales. Some of the competitions you could use are below:-
* Double Hostess Rewards
* February Booking Raffle
* Gift Vouchers for specified sales targets. (You can get these from Coles etc)
*Easter Basket – Have this running until just before Easter with a range of Easter eggs in it. Set a limit of $80 worth of Chocolate or something like that. Even use someone that you know of that sells chocolate.
* Sow & Grow Competition – I read about this competition in one of the books I have read. Seems like some fun.

At the beginning of the year visit selected customers. Offer them a chance to participate; this can be done by phone or mail. To the customers that have accepted, give them a tomatoe plant (or other if you wish) in a pot with your details stuck to it. The aim is to grow the most successful plant with the most fruit. You can organise weekly stats or meets. You can judge this by the amount of fruit that it produces or the weight, it will be upto you. Give the winner a special prize. You can select how long you would like this competition to run but in saying that leave enough time for the plant to grow and start fruiting, say 6 months.

Unexpected Gifts
Use this idea as a relationship builder. You can send off a small gift to certain customers. The thought of receiving something for free and by surprise is always good. Customers will remember you for the thought.

Create a Privileged Customer Group
Select a few customers that have bought you increased sales. You can off them specials not normally offered. It is upto you if you charge a nominal fee for 12 months. Maybe $10 to cover the cost of printing and laminating a Customer Card. Customers might take up the offer knowing that not everyone has these cards. Specials offered could be:-
*15% discount on all purchases
*Buy one get one free (my suggestion would be to set a limit say upto an item valued at $50)
Always remember to have specials on a regular basis. Offer for the customer to receive updates every month or 2 weeks on the new specials you have going.

Launch a Frequent Buyer Program
Offer all customers to join a free frequent buyer program. Offer bonuses for amounts bought. Set guidelines. Some of the guidelines could be the ones below:- *1 point for every $40 spent.
*Double points if you host a party (So 2 points for every $40 spent)
*Buy items with points once they reach 8.
Use this promotion to your advantage by getting rid of old stock, or stock that does not move very quickly.

Offer specials to New Customers
Come up with some new specials for New Customers. Offer these specials for 1 month or 2 months through out 2005. Always change them.

Swap Job Promotion
Now this is one of two ideas I have come up with. First being, Ask a customer if we were to switch jobs how would you like to see here? This is another way of getting a referral off a customer. It can be fun but might not always work. Second being, You be the hostess and get the hostess to show you where everything is, like coffee, tea etc. And the hostess will be the presenter for the show. This sounds like it could be fun, I have personally not tried this yet but will do in the New Year. If you do try this please let me know how it goes.

Customer referral promotion
This is for getting recruiting leads. Ask customers is they have a friend that might like doing this – give their contact details and if they sign with you with 6 months of the initial referral or you could offer 12 months they will get $100 or product free. You can always offer different things, this is personal choice.
