You have the product, now you need the customer base.

By Margaret Furnace

Many of us in our different businesses have great products that we would like to promote in different ways. If you are considering on mailing lists this could be a great step for you in improving your business tenfold. Here are a few steps for helping you in getting the mailing list created from scratch.

Customers
These are the most important names to get on your mailing list, as these are the people that have seen your products and could be repeat customers.

Prospects
These names can be collated from interest received in your product through a website, phone calls, or emails.

Suppliers
Suppliers that you source your products from are also great to have on mailing lists, as they might be able to advise you of suggestions on new products and the services you provide.

Employees
Add these people to you mailing list as they will have a different customer base that they can forward to.

The Press
By sending your newsletter to the press they will get to know your company and may remember your name when writing articles related to our industry.

Non-competing organisations
Non-competing or complimentary organsiations are a great source. Often if the organisation does not offer a service that you have they might suggest your name. Examples have been personally recently I visited a Spotlight store to find a kitchen appliance to help with Sushi, they did not stock it so they then pointed me to a shop that held the item just down the road.

Community
Distribute your newsletter to community groups. This is a positive for your business because if you offer fundraising events, they might look upon you to hold the next fundraising event. Get other people to forward it. If you have people that are on your mailing list that would like to forward your newsletter add this to your newsletter, as the more people that see your newsletter the better.

Free Lists
If you are a member of a trade association or group, they might offer you the contact details for their members. This is not often allowed but you will lose nothing if you ask.

Newsletter or Journal insert
If you have a large customer base in one area, this is another option of getting your news out there. Some businesses have used this low-cost way of advertising to customers.

Links from other websites
Many websites offer a trade link. If you link to their website they will link to yours. Again this is a positive as the more traffic you can get to your website the better.

As you can see there is a range of ideas on getting people on your mailing list. Remember that if someone contacts you to be removed, it would be the idea to remove them as they are not wishing to receive updates and it would be a waste of everyone’s time in continuing to do so.
